Spring had shut itself up in the courtyard, as if it had parted ways with the other scenery. So instead of the box-shaped planter, the birdcage hanging on the handrail outside the window became our visual signal. The children, whose beaks are still blue and yet who speak as if fully grown, learned this from the small birds who bathe not in the nearby birdbath, but in the clean drinking water.
